A Final Farewell to AC2
My final farewell to Asheron’s Call 2 post, but not necessarily my final post about AC2. I’ll simply quote the lonely item on the official AC2 website, because they said it quite well:
Empyrean magic has once again fled this world. The battle for Dereth continues on a different plane now. As his final act in this realm, Asheron sealed every portal to contain the expanding horde and protect what is left of the races who called Dereth home.
As of December 30, 2005 the AC2 service is no longer available. Turbine and the AC2 development team would like to express our thanks to the many players who’ve been part of Asheron’s Call 2 over the years. We hope you’ve had as much fun playing the game as we did creating it for you.
It’s never easy to say goodbye to a place you’ve called home, but we hope to see all of you in Turbine’s other worlds.
Goodbye, Asheron’s Call 2. Thank you for all of the wonderful memories and lessons that we’ve learned, and please don’t give up all hope for the future world of Dereth.
According to Ethic at Kill Ten Rats, they did go out with dignity by holding some fun events. That’s good to hear, but further perpetuates the sense of sadness that I feel knowing the game is likely gone for good. They did a decent number of engaging events like this, and if the game had caught on with a wider audience it could have been very successful. Why wasn’t it more successful? The basic foundational problem is that the world is not in an identifiable fantasy setting. That discussion is for another time. I’ll link more articles on AC2 as they appear around the web.
Farewell, Asheron’s Call 2. Goodbye Dereth. See you in other worlds.
