Munched by a Green Monster
You remember that leap of faith I was talking about a while back? It appears that was the start of a back-to-back leap of faith season for me, because I just made another one (if one would call careful consideration a leap of faith). Though I’d already decided to leave SOE and move home to Colorado before this opportunity become something real, I’ve decided to move on to the next chapter of my game development career already.
Like my good friend Steve “Moorgard” Danuser, I’ve joined up with Green Monster Games. Curt Schilling, Todd McFarlane, R.A. Salvatore. Three names you may very well have heard before. I’ll be working with them on a new project at a new company, developing a new community for a new game, and designing a new game for a new community. Lots of new stuff!
I moved out to good ole Massachusetts a little more than a week ago, and I’m more than a little excited about it. I can’t really say anything about the game just yet, but you’ll hear more as time goes on. Suffice it to say that I’m freaking pumped about the game and the company. Though most of us have only known each other for a short time, we’re already like a family out here. That’s the type of chemistry you need to make an amazing game, and I’m sure we won’t disappoint.
More information on this first round of hires at Green Monster Games can be found in today’s press release.

Congrats
Woot. Going to be some good things coming out of GMG me thinks…
Gratz on the new Job! You will need to give us a heads up so we can start a http://www.whatever-daily.com website for your new MMO. Looking forward to seeing what comes out of GMG. Good luck with everything.
Ahhh Beantown – you’ll love it and simultaneously hate it.
Some quick advice:
Food: Head down to Providence and check out the Eclectic Grille – best food and seriously, the best cheesecake ever! Mattapoisett has the best sushi place around (or did) called Tokyo Restaurant. Ask if you can be seated on the couches and sit back and enjoy yourself. Want a romantic dinner? The Vault. Great wine and good food.
Take a buggy ride one day and drive out to P-Town. Go with an open mind and you will have a blast.
Driving is seriously a risk vs reward scenario. If you can, take a train.
You’re heading North East in the worst possible season, they don’t like to sand the roads until they see if the snow will melt off. I wrecked 2 cars while out there.
Have fun out there, and make sure you take some time to look around. It’s a neat area and there’s always something fun for you to do.
Wow! That’s going to be one exciting venture my friend! Very exciting indeed! Now I can’t wait to hear more about this venture.. clearly an MMOG of sorts… with that team, nothing else would make sense.. ahh much to ask, but know there’s little you can tell. Man, I can hardly believe it, but you know, it’s damn good news and I’m happy as hell for ya! =)
Hmm.. When I was in Maine, you were in San Diego… I move to San Diego… you move to Massachusetts.. I sense a trend here =P
Don’t fuck up!
The list of names attached to this project just gets better. Looking forward to picking up every scrap of info you slip out.
Have to agree, though, California to the Northeast this close to winter? Even a Colorado native has to experience some shock there.
[...] Danuser has more here, on his blog, as does Mr. Gnome. More on this news in about (checks watch)… four years or so. [...]
Okay, Moorgard was easy to guess, but your moving to Colorado threw me off!
Grats to you!!! I know any game you and M.G. are involved in can’t help but be wonderful and look forward to hearing more.
I *cough* come from New England and all my family is there, so if GMG needs a resident rabid fan, lemme know
Congrats on the new job and all! I can’t wait to see what you’ve got in the works, I’ll definately keep my eyes open.
Congrats!
Now I’ll have to keep an eye on GMG site to see what you and Moorgard are up to.
congrats!
i hope that Green Monster Games always stays true to the first statement in that press release.
“…a company dedicated to producing innovative massively multiplayer online games.”
sounds good to me.
now make it a reality.
Grats! I can’ t wait to see what you put out next. I was already excited about Green Monster when I heard about Salvatore and McFarlane but knowing that you and MG are on it has sealed the deal. I’m officially a fanboy!
Congratulations on the new job and project. I can’t wait to see what is happening there and what the game is like
My sister owns a Dominos in Westfield, so if you get some late-night cravings for wings and cinnaStix — I’ll trade you for a beta invite. All you can eat!
On a sidenote: From my days of reading comics, I hear that McFarlane is a bit of a control freak, so you have my permission to nerf his ass should he get out of line. Also, doesn’t he own Madonna’s bra or something? That’s a little…creepy. In a strictly 1980s kind of way.
Congrats Ryan! I look forward to playing what you guys come up with.
Ryan congrats.
I must say this is the best thing GMG’s could have done. Up till now I’ve always viewed GMG like the Planet Hollywood of the MMO world. Just because you enjoy MMO’s doesn’t mean you should make a company that makes them.
I guess we’ll see. I mean so far in tems of actual MMO development experiance, who’s working there?
Congratulations!
Here are some comments from Moorgard and Blackguard regarding the recent press release from Green Moster.
Wow, nostalgia. This website seems like another life. Best of luck with your new project.
Welcome to the Boston gaming scene. See you at a future Post Mortum then, or digging out a car from the snow — whichever comes first.
Grats. Drink and smoke a lot of dope in order to make a next gen game that makes everything else look like old hat.
Smoke a little crack if you need it to think outside the box.
consideration a leap of faith). Though I’d already decided to leave SOE and move home to Colorado before this opportunity become something real, I’ve decided to move on to the next chapter of my game development career already. Read about it here…
Hey congratulations, I love it when people who write good stuff get to go and make good stuff!
[...] I’m a little behind on my news, but Nerfbat got snatched up by Green Monster Games. I mentioned this company a while back (Schilling, Salvatore, McFarlane) and had high hopes. He joins several other ex-SOE/EQ2 team members (Moorgard, Erik Theisz, and Michael Woods) in the quest to “[change] the landscape of the MMO gaming world“. Heck yeah. Good luck and Godspeed, guys. [...]
Good luck man.
It sounds like a great opportunity with some extremely passionate people.
know what is going on, while it is my full time goal to build one amazing company. But in another sense, this is profoundly ridiculous. Curt Schilling is starting a major new gaming company in Boston and doesn’t want to talk about it, neither do his team members. I also have heard that there are somewhere between four and 200 “YouTube for Games” companies starting right now, but past that have no idea what they plan to do. Why is it easier to learn about my peers from venture capitalists than, simply, from
