Second Life Client Now Open Source
The Second Life client has now gone open source. Linden Lab will be allowing outside programmers to update their viewer for them, and will include the features of their (Linden’s) choice in the official version of the client. Yet another way for your customer base to do a lot of the work for you. It’ll be really interesting to see how this pans out. More information can be found here.

So they watched Blizzard do this with mods and their client, then said “what a damn good idea!” ? It is a damn good idea to a certain extent. Generally, if independent developers are making a separate module to perform a function not already available in the company’s client, then that function is something that is sought after by the consumers. It is unfortunate that it is also a general rule that the company will not give any sort of nod to the person who did the actual implementation work the first time around. Hopefully there’ll be a balance to the situation before developers get frustrated with having their work ripped off for corporate profit and stop making these wonderful modules.
