Eh the Nine didn't have their air mounts until the later part of the books. 



I guess they didn't hit level 70 until the middle of the Two Towers :D</description>

The heroes did not even consider the eagle-ring-drop scenario because the eagles would have faced a higher probability of detection and defeat by Sauron, the Ring Wraiths and their air-mounts. 
At the end of the story, Sauron's power is already waning because of the Ring's destruction, his army is in disarray, and so the eagles were able to manage the rescue operation.</description>
