The New 7 Wonders of the World
Did you realize that on 07/07/07, the new 7 wonders of the world were unveiled? I didn’t. Then again, I haven’t had cable since early June, so I’ve been in the dark. The new 7 wonders of the world are: The Great Wall, China; Petra, Jordan; Christ Redeemer, Brazil; Machu Picchu, Peru; Chichén Itzá, Mexico; The Roman Colosseum, Italy; and The Taj Mahal, India. Runners up: The Acropolis, Greece; Alhambra, Spain; Angkor, Cambodia; Statues of Easter Island, Chile; Eiffel Tower, France; Hagia Sophia, Turkey; Kiyomizu Temple, Japan; Kremlin/St. Basil, Russia; Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany; Pyramids of Giza, Egypt; Statue of Liberty, USA; Stonehenge, United Kingdom; Sydney Opera House, Australia; Timbuktu, Mali. You can find out a lot more at New7Wonders.com.

I think we should create a list of the 7 wonders of the virtual worlds here in these comments.
My submissions:
Kelethin (EQ/EQ2)
The Floating Castle - Did it have a name or was that it? (UO)
The Inn - Shadow of Yseribus
Rivendell - LOTRO
Lavastorm - EQ2
Jueno Airship Dock - FFXI
The Pyramids aren’t a wonder anymore?
I can understand the Hanging Gardens what with current events, but….
The classical Seven Wonders are and remain the same seven. Given that most of them vanished in the BCs, no great surprise that there’s no change there.
The Seven Wonders of the ‘modern’ world, however, are always going to be in a state of flux and will vary from time to time depending on politics, ethics, aesthetics.
Seems to me from their list though that they are lumping together ‘wonders’ from across the ages, I mean Stonehenge and the Eiffel Tower? Both wonderful, but both ‘wonders’?
Maybe, in a society where anyone who can get their photo in the papers twice is a ‘celebrity’ then ‘wonder’ has also become terribly debased?
What about The Barrens? Let’s be honest, surviving the Barrens chat IS a wonder
“The Pyramids aren’t a wonder anymore?”
They had to be nerfed to preserve balance.
Good idea, Cyanbane.
Kelethin: Agreed
Maj’Dul from EQII?
Ironforge from WoW?
hmm…
Oh, this idea is too good to bury in an obscure comment thread (no offense)…
I was going to offer to code a page just for it, something to tally votes for a good long while. Maybe digg-like. A form like:
“Wonder: _________”
“from game: _______”
“[thumbnail]” with a link to a pics page, maybe… And it’d need a search and duplicate-reporting functionality to avoid splitting a wonder’s votes.
But, it’s too good an idea for a “biased source” either… much as I just want to steal it and run away with it right now anyway.
Ok, I’m volunteering to assist with any PHP coding needed if a neutral third party would like to host the thing. ‘Cause if I code it and host it, there might be drama.
But even if I’m not needed for either:
I think you could run this for several months - or maybe to the end of the year, announce the winners, and shut-down voting ’til July of ‘08 for next year’s “Seven Wonders of the Virtual Worlds”.
Seriously, this would be great.
If no one pops up here to volunteer, then I’ll do it anyway and just suffer. I think it’s THAT good an idea.
It’d be a wonderful website.
SORTED by wonder, in fact.
I’d be more than happy to host it. I’m not sure I have time to make a pretty front end for it but I have no issue with hosting it on this server. Um… email me I guess? rshwayder –backwards ta– nerfbat.com (or 38studios.com).
We can scoop up a sexy domain and get going.
7VirtualWonders.com has been registered.
Stonehenge was actually my favourite, sad that it didn’t make it :(.
Great idea Jeff on the virtual wonders, I might just have to reactivate my EQ2 or EQ account to take screenshots of some of my favourite locations lol.
I second Kelethin too, and more specifically, the Clock of Ak’Anon in Qeynos harbour!
Nice, I could help with a design if needed.
Check this out: it’s pligg.
Basically a digg clone - and has tons of plugins to add IMing and the like, just a few of which I couldn’t activate on Yahoo! php4 deals.
After dressing it up so it doesn’t look so much like a digg clone, I think it’d be a fine framework for people to submit their nominees, vote or not on them, and so on. Might want to be pretty lax when it comes to nominees, but when it comes to pick the seven really get restrictive with the votes.
I wouldn’t mind replacing the login with Yahoo BBAuth or OpenID, either. I am SO sick of setting up yet another profile page.
Argh! They never just lemme point to one of the billions I have out there already!
Let me know what I can do. Coding or hosting.
