Question: Guitar Hero 3/Rock Band Controller
I got Guitar Hero 3 for Christmas without a guitar. I had the previous two for PS2 and got this on for the Xbox 360. I also have Rock Band for the 360. I found out much to my dismay that my Rock Band guitar is not compatible with Guitar Hero 3. After some investigation, it appears to be intentional on Activision/RedOctane’s part since Harmonix made the GH guitars work for Rock Band. Does anyone know if there’s a way to fix this? If not, Guitar Hero 3 is on its way back to GameStop and I’m getting BioShock or Mass Effect.

Sadface. You can’t buy the Les Paul separately right now as far as I know. I do want two guitar controllers for Rock Band/GH, but getting one now would only get me two guitars in Rock Band.
So far all communication out of Activision/RedOctane (i.e. none) indicates they have no plans to ever patch the GH games to allow the RB guitar to function. It really is a shame, because I always wanted to get the GH games, but I never liked the buttons on their guitars. After getting Rock Band and loving the guitar I wanted to run out and buy GH 2 and 3 for my 360… Activision lost my money.
Bummer dude. I was just playing GH3 on PS2 with dual wireless Rock Band controllers and they worked perfectly…
Yeah, I also was wondering this. Part of the reason i want to buy rock band is so we could use both guitars on Guitar Hero.
I’ve got the 360 guitar that came with GH3, and it’s compatible with Rockband. If you return your GH3 disk and get one that comes with the guitar, you can play both games.
I had the same problem i cant get my rockband guitar to work for guitar hero 3.

Note: the GH3 wireless guitar works just dandy for Rock Band. And personally, me and most of my friends vastly prefer its feel to the guitar that came with rock band. If you have the cash, you may consider picking up GH3 with the wireless guitar anyway.
I haven’t played BioShock (apart from the demo three times) because it will take up too much time, and I have a limited amount of time to play video games.
As for getting a GH3 controller, I don’t think you can get one separate from the game yet, can you?
Get either of those. Hell, get both. Mass Effect is the best written game I’ve ever played, and the first one in a long time that I really want to replay to explore the “other side” (I went for ruthless the first time). And BioShock is probably the best case for “Games as Art” I’ve ever seen, the whole thing is basically an indictment of Objectivism, while managing to be extremely fun and visually terrific I’m only halfway through BS right now, but I’m told except for the final boss fight it stays good.

I’m with Dave – Bioshock is all good right up to the big boss fight. Its not bad , not like the last boss fight in SS2. But it’s not hawsome like the rest of the game.
Wait, I take that back. It’s just like the final boss fight in System Shock 2, which is probably why its not so good.
But totally give up sleep to play if you have to. I think that should probably come with a medical warning about lack of sleep, but it’s worth it.

No, you can’t currently but the GH3 guitar separate from the game.
And people keep saying “The GH3 guitar works in Rock Band” … and yes, it does. But the original lament was that the Rock Band guitar does not work in GH3, and likely never will.

I can’t get my RB mike to work. It has all of the cords it just won’t respond when I speak into it. Is it just me? Or is the mike faulty
You have to use a normal controller to make selections for the microphone. It’s weird, but it’s the only way to do it.

that sucks because i like fender better than gibson and was gonna buy gh3 and rb and jus get a rb controller and use it but i now will jus use my gh3 controller for rock band and i guess thats what you can do too.
p.s. is it possible to get a fender controller for rock band because if so i will get it cuz i hav a fender guitar and i like it beter than gibson
The Rock Band guitar controller is a Fender. The Guitar Hero 3 controller is a Gibson. You can’t use the Fender for Guitar Hero 3, but you can use both the Fender and Gibson for Rock Band.
Honestly I would just get both games, GH3 and RB and when the Nyko Frontman comes out Sell the two guitars on ebay and get 2 Frontmans problem solved then you have two guitars that work with both games. The only problem is you loose the awesome Fender

We, unfortunately, found out the RB guitar doesn’t work with our GH3. But I pose another question…Is the individual GH 1&2 guitar compatible with GH3 game? We have GH3 game and just need a guitar for it. I’ve read reviews on various websites and it’s split about the compatibility.

Wireless GH3 guitars are for sale now, and they are running at around $35 at target.
And i do believe you can use GH2 guitars with GH3, im pretty sure the guys at Activitision made it backwards compatible.

This is RUBBISH!!!!!! the PS3 is the only console where the guitar from Guitar Hero 3 wont work on Rock Band. 360, PS2 and the Wii’s versions all work perfectly fine so y not the PS3.

Really, activision/redoctane are just complete faggots. The new guitar hero, which strangely enough is no longer focused around guitar but an entire game, doesn’t support rock band instruments which means you have to fork out another couple of hundred

Well it’s pretty stupid that RB’s guitar does not work with GH, and it seems that most people with RB would like to purchase GH3 and not have to buy the overpriced guitars yet GH guitars are compatible with RB. It doesn’t make any sense!!!

The guitar Hero 3 controller DOES WORK WITH RB on PS3 i’ve read thousands of these threads saying it doesn’t work and this morning i said F it and wanted to try it out. IT WORKS IT WORKS JESUS CHRIST IT WORKS!!!!!!! So I’m guessing it will work on RB 2 since anything that works with rock band will work with 2. One more thing last night i turned on my rockband for the first time in a long time and it installed an update. So whether that update had anything to do with it I dunno but IT WORKS!!!
ughhhhh i cant use the gh3 conroller. its wayyy hard. the rockband guitar is easier at the bottom of the neck which gh3 doesnt have. why doesnt rockband jus pay gh3 or sumthing im tired of playing sum hard songs on gh3 n all expert on rockband.
i got guitar hero 3 for xbox for xmas too, i have rockband already and just asumed the controller would work for either game boy was i wrong! what a bunch a crap! you would think that the stinkin guitar would work on any game that requires a guitar, i think this is a microsoft problem, they should insure that all controllers work with all games.
I ‘m another that purchased GHIII on X360 assuming i could play using my Rock Band guitar. There is no excuse as to why they couldn’t quickly and easily patch in compatibility, other than the spitefulness of Activision. Seriously, start thinking of the goddamn fans rather than your relationships with competitors.

About your comment on the fact that rockband instruments wont work on GH4… The guitars dont work but the drums DO. Me and my friends play gh4 using the default rockband drumkit and the game changes to accomodate the 4 pads. And the Mic works as well. If you need the guitars, just go on ebay or go to gamestop and get a new or used guitar hero guitar: any of them will work.
I just pieced the whole set together seperately (cheap except for the drums had 2 buy new) and found the RB2 drum kit works great with all GH gamesbut not vice versa. got a friend who’s a pro drummer and says the feel of them is better anyway- just not the layout. hate the les paul and the gibson frets… feel cheap and don’t work with arthritis .. Someone needs to make an adapter so I can use my fender with GH cause the songs are done much more technically correct than RB
Found a cheap source for used guitar controllers here in Las Vegas…. gonna make a hybrid Fender Stratocaster with the PC board and sender from the gibson….. gonna have my cake and eat it too… Go figure, a contact is a contact and all ya gotta do is wire the contacts to the other board.
