Anyone Playing Pirates of the Burning Sea?
If so, what server? I’ve made my obligatory “Captain Morgan” clone, a hot chick, and a character I might actually play. All are on Blackbeard right now, but I’ll play wherever. My first impressions are the same as my old beta impressions: good game, reminds me of old school Pirates! The main drawback is pacing, which can be slow. Sailing is far too slow, especially when the wind is against you (I understand why, but it doesn’t make it fun). But, I think I’m going to have a good time as a merchant of opportunity, and I’ll continue to hope that they make ship combat faster (note to self: email friends at SOE and maybe they’ll talk to Flying Lab).

I’ll be playing at least by the 24th. (Giving myself two days to patch). So we will have to see what servers.
Or come on our forums and talk directly with us!
I absolutely LOVE the sailing myself – totally got into the naval battle part of it. It would be moving into the niche realm, but I actually wish they’d gone even further with it and let you do your sea battles in a first person mode on your ship. Call it “expert mode” but doing battles from the ship deck (PvE or PvP) would kick ass.
The only time I didn’t like it is when I had to sail out of some area to complete a quest and it was right into the wind the whole way – took me 5 minutes to exit a quest once I’d finished.
Yep that’s the particularly annoying part. When sailing into the wind, you go so incredibly slow it’s ridiculous. Not to mention having to reach an exit point sometimes after you’ve completed the mission entirely.
I played through the end of closed and then open beta and had a blast, but couldn’t bring myself to buy it because it just seemed like there wasn’t alot to it once you got past the ‘sailing is neat’ feeling. That said, if I’d had a spare gift card or somesuch lying around I might have (and may still) pick it up. The PvP aspect of the game was really a ton of fun.
I’m sure you already know this, but its much faster to tack upwind than to steer right into it. Catching a favorable current can make a big difference, too. So plan routes accordingly.
I will give it a try, but I have to buy a decent gaming rig first (1000 Euro, argh!). My old heap-o’iron is merely able to run WoW. POTBS Open Beta was rather a slide show for me as soon as I enhanced the gfx settings only the slightest bit
And with setting at lowest, it just looks dull.
I’m playing, but I haven’t put in enough playtime yet to get a good feel for it, but so far I’m having fun. (I may still be in the “sailing is neat” phase mentioned earlier.) I’ve been running into occasional bouts of completely unplayable lag, which bothers me a bit since this is pre-launch still….
Update: I have a pirate on Rackham now named “Gar Luckbad.” He’s a mighty level 8.
Yet another update: Starting to like it much more now that I’ve ventured into the Open Sea and passed level 10. I’m also delving into the economy a bit, with a few warehouses and production facilities. Some pretty fun stuff, and I’ve found that I have more fun rocking ships in the sea than doing instanced quests.
I dont like instanced games, its anti-climax. Tried open beta, had enough of the ´sailing is neat´ and then left it.. I do prefer sandbox games, where you are free to do and to go wharever you want. (sorry the bad english, I am brazilian portuguese speaker
)
Being over here in the UK I’ve opted for one of the EU servers and, on the whole, it’s not been too laggy even when town gets a little busy.
From what I can see (and this is totally uninformed, off the top of the head, I didn’t take notes and haven’t run the numbers so don’t sue me) it seems to be Instances = Good Coin, Open Sea = Good XP.
I’m still in the ‘hey, sailing is cool’ phase and haven’t found sailing upwind to be too much of a hassle *if you tack*. But yeah, it’s a totally different pace to most other titles.
I think I’ve resigned myself to the idea that it’s never going to be the nautical / historical RPG that I’d hoped it would be. Going ashore and finding a bunch of busty female Royal Marines finally put that notion to rest and, if FLS can live with that, well, I’ll just *have* to put up with all the bimbo ‘captains’ running around.
