Latest Site Updates
You may have noticed me working on the site for the last few days after the move. I’ve been trying to improve it in a bunch of little ways to make visiting Nerfbat more fun. First, though, I’d like to take a second to thank those who have donated: Cyanbane, Genda, and Jason. Thank you very much for the donations–if they weren’t already put toward hosting, they will be put toward podcasting gear. So, what’s new around these parts?
- Server: If it wasn’t obvious, the site is on a new server. It’s way faster, and I have the GuildCafe Alliance to thank for it.
- Ratings: You can now rate individual posts to your heart’s content to let me know what’s good and what sucks.
- Subscriptions: You can once again get email subscriptions to Nerfbat if you don’t want to use a feed reader.
- Bookmarks: There are links to some of the most popular social bookmark sites at the bottom of each post. Feel free to share!
- Smilies: There are now clickable smilies above the comment box. I had these at one point but they broke–now they work again.
- Donations: I ditched the two buttons I had at the bottom and added a donate graphic that looks good with the theme(s).
- Forums: The Forums went to vBulletin then came back to phpBB for now. Sorry for the trouble that caused.
- Google 404: If you go somewhere on the site that doesn’t exist, you get a search page. It’s still ugly for now.
Please let me know if you notice any issues with the site! Coming up: Possibly some more AJAX features. I probably won’t implement a real-time search box because the script is too big and can take time to load, but I’m going to try to get comments to have a pretty live preview and post without refreshing the page.

If I could make a suggestion; a way to do a recurring donation (like a subscription) so we could give x dollars a month, for example, would be a good thing. I think PayPal has a way to do that although I’m far from an expert on it.

I just looked into the recurring subscription stuff for PayPal and unfortunately I’d have to upgrade to a paying account to do so. I also can’t find any information about how much it costs to upgrade (I can’t find the price anywhere!).
The answer to your question is “There is no cost.”
The REAL answer is that after you upgrade to a Premier or Business account, the fees change. Fee listing. They also remove the $500 per month receive limit.
That’s what I mean. You aren’t allowed to accept recurring subscriptions until you have a Premier account.
And that’s why I’m saying… there is no fixed fee. Upgrading to Premier changes your fee schedule and removes the limit… how much it “costs” you will depend on how people elect to pay:
Receive payments funded by PayPal Balance, PayPal Instant Transfer or PayPal eCheck
Personal: Free
Premier: 1.9% to 2.9% + $0.30 USD
Receive payments funded by Credit Card, Debit Card or Buyer Credit
Personal: 4.9% + $0.30 USD (limit of 5 transactions per 12 month period)** for domestic or U.S. transactions, 2% + applicable Fees Fees for cross border payments, 4.9% plus $0.30 USD for card payments received using PayPal on Skype
Premier: 1.9% to 2.9% + $0.30 USD
Premier isn’t a “paying account” as there is no charge for an account, ever. They just remove the limits and change the fees.
