I use an MX revolution, and before that an MX1000, and I have every button there specially set up. Even the left / right on the wheel scroll is programmed depending on the game. Without the software the mouse works fine and is very responsive, just as you say. I actually thought of that as a negative to begin with, but ended up forgetting that fact so it must not bother me in the end. I made my G5 much heavier than most people do myself, but still am happy with the weight of the DeathAdder even though it doesn't weight that much. It doesn’t have a weight pack like the G5.
