Ryan, maybe I will see you in Eve Uni; I'm trying to get in there as well. Vermishank in-game.

I recently wrote about trying Eve again on my blog, www.olmmod.com, and it seems like we could be of the same mind on this. Being MMO vets. Appreciating what Eve is. Knowing that there's a glorious endgame in there somewhere, but not being sure how to get to it. Ahh, the noob blues.

All the good bloggers are in Eve Uni :p

Come and try Beyond Protocol - not as pretty as eve (what is) but the scale is going to be on par and the gameplay is potentially better. It is a 3d client based MMORTS in Closed BETA atm, developed by Dark Sky Entertainment. I too enjoyed the potential of eve and the scifif theme but foun dit was similar to ogame and many web based simulations and mmo's. Neyond protocol, like all real MMORTS games, is live, huge, persistent, features full unit/component custom design, planet to orbit to space environments and so much I cant be arsed to go on - dont flick this off- you will regret it imo - i just run a website for the entire genre and this is a defining game coming.

If you haven't already found a corp, I'll wholeheartedly second Eve University. I also tried Eve a couple times before it clicked for me, and Eve University was primarily responsible. It's a unique group of people; I've never encountered anything like it in all the MMO's I've played.

Since Eve is one big world, anyone who wants to get involved teaching new players the intricacies of the Eve universe can find a steady influx of new players in Eve University. Their website has a ton of great information about how to play Eve. They offer regular classes, in-game, on the basics of combat, mining, industry, and being a well-rounded pilot (scanning, exploration, safe-spotting, traveling safely, etc.). There were also plenty of opportunities to get into PvP, as griefers like to declare war on the newbies...but E-UNI usually ends up spanking opponents. They're led by great pilots, seriously organized, and a lot of fun to fly with.

Their recruitment thread on the Eve-O forums is http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=521860

Even if you only fly with them for a few months, it's a chance to learn a ton more about the game and to experience a unique teaching environment in MMO's.

I enjoyed the game well enough, but it was just a little too esoteric for my wife, who I usually duo with. She tried it, but she just couldn't get into it, and I didn't love it enough to play it alone. (Unlike TF2.)

We're both playing WAR at the moment (yes, we were both lucky enough to swing beta invites back in beta one and two, respectively.) I can't really talk about it, other than to say it's what we're choosing to play, which should tell you something.

EVE doesn't grab me like a traditional MMO does, even though it's a good game. If you all keep playing I may fire up my account again and join you all. I have a guy with a few million training points in, so it's not like I'd have to start from complete scratch.

Interesting - I just picked up the EVE 14-day trial and am halfway through it - I'm kind of liking it, though I probably need to re-roll since I want to do a bit more fighting now vs. the merchant/ mining I thought I'd originally like to do...

Also, I guess I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum with the whole character disassociation, and was very puzzled with all the character look/ customization one "needs" to do at the beginning, only to have it show up in the upper-right corner (and some small 10x10 pixel image when you bring someone's ship up.)

I'll try to connect up with ya BG!

I'm enjoying EVE as a "casual, play-it-every-once-in-a-while-to-take-a-break-from-other-things-I-play" type of thing. No way I could play it as my "only" MMO. I'd be bored in a hurry.

But playing it every so often, and in a corp that like to do oddball things from time to time like getting a gang of 4 frigs together and trying to run level 3 missions, or seeing if we can get to 0.0 and how long we can survive just blasting through varios sovs down there.... it's kinda fun, even if we are "mostly carebear."

You might want to try and hook up with the f13 crew. They've got two corps going, one involved in 0.0 and the other in factional warfare.

Hey there! Good to see you on EVE, I've shot you an EVEmail already.

The best thing about EVE? You can put it down for weeks or even months at a time and come back to a character more advanced than when you left it. Offline skill training, FTW!

My "new main" character is, oddly enough, named Tiler Adam. I rolled him around the time I started Mahogany Finish. I'm trying to gain admittance into a 0.0 corp with him, but it looks like I might need to have something more on my CV than "six months in the State War Academy." My older, somewhat more advanced character, lies mostly unused until certain influential figures either forget his name or leave the game =/

When I log in next, I'll be sure to contact you.
