A Love Letter to CCP
If there’s one feature I want to see in EVE’s Apocrypha expansion, it’s the ability to change my mouse settings. In what crazy world of fire, ice, and elves does scrolling the mouse wheel backwards zoom toward your avatar? It’s one of the most annoying little things that I’ve always hated about EVE. There are about a zillion options in the game, but none of them let you change any mouse settings. No inversion, no switching zoom with the scroll wheel to perform the same as every other game in the world, nothing. Blergh.

I have asked that very question myself.
I saw you log on over the weekend. Was wondering if you were looking for somebody to punch or if lack of Darkfall access had you searching for PvP.
/agree. Took me forever to get used to it in EVE.
Sadly, I often do it “wrong way” in all the other games I play now as well.
Curse you EVE and CCP!
Yeah I have the PvP bug right now. Trying to earn some money. Gone from 12 mil to 18 mil in the past day or so. Still have no idea what the best somewhat inexpensive PvP build is though. Any clues would be appreciated. Right now, I have a Bestower and a bunch of cargo expanders to get money.
The Punisher is a popular cheapfleet choice for Amarr…

If you’re playing Amarr then yeah, the Punisher is probably your “best” pvp boat — especially with an Autocannon build. Punisher doesn’t get a laser damage bonus, so there’s no real reason to slap on lasers instead of (non-capacitor using) Autocannons.
The Rifter is also highly regarded as a PvP boat, if you’ve got a little bit of Minmatar trained. Fast, agile, and has nice tracking with autocannons.
For Caldari…. kinda meh. If you have good fitting skills a Kestrel has good range wit hits missiles, but the dps is low and it’s easy for other frigs to juke your point if you’re out near max while staying out of their range. Merlin has a better tank, and equipping it with rockets + blasters is decent, but it’s kinda slow.
For Gallente… well, I have Gal Frig 4 and even Tech 2 hybrid weapons and drones, but I haven’t really flown their frigs much. I’ve heard that the…. um. Ishkur? is a good T1 boat, but I might be telling you the T2 variant’s name. FWIW, they have the best destroyer — the Catalyst!
Sadly, destroyers have more or less the same tank and speed as a frig, but a much higer sig radius, so they are easier for bigger ships to target and damage. But then again, dessies are kinda considered “lol-fail” too, so if you popped 8 of the 125 mm rails on a Catalyst along with some long-range ammo, you could probably surprise quite a few frigates before someone finally decided to target you.
This assumes small gang or faction warfare, of course. If you’re looking for solo pvp…. rifter or punisher for sure!
lifeinlowsec.blogspot.com is a pvp pirate’s blog. She’s usually in a small gang, but she’s also got several posts about solo flying as well. Her preferred ship seems to be a Rifter.
Cool. I have one of those Punishers in Amarr. I also have a Coercer with a bunch of lasers on it for running missions. The issue I’m running into with that is CPU/Power–I can’t activate everything at once. Will also look into the Rifter.
You’re Marakhan, right?
To help with your cpu and PG problems there are 4 skills you should look at training asap:
Electronics — 5% more ship cpu per level
Engineering — 5% more ship PG per level
Weapon Upgrades — reduces CPU need of any weapon by 5% per level
Advanced Weapon Upgrades — reduces PG need of any weapon by 2% per level (Weapon Upgrades 5 needed as pre-requisite)
Getting these to at least 4 (well, WU to 5 so you can have AWU to 4) will solve about 90% of all your fitting problems. Really, even just getting WU to 4 and not having AWU at all will probably solve about 85% of them.
After that, follow the axiom that “Capacitor is LIFE!!!!” and look at:
Energy Systems Operation — 5% faster capacitor recharge per level
Energy Management — 5% larger capacitor per level
Energy Emission Systems — Allows usage of energy vampires to give you more cap from your enemies
Energy Grid Upgrades — allows use of cap rechargers, flux coils, and power relays
Work in whatever weapon, tanking, and ship-flying skills you feel you need too — don’t think that you “must” do these to the exclusion of all others. I’m just barely finishing my capacitor skills out now myself, and I’m pushing 19 million SP now. However, getting all of these to at least 3 will be a really good start that shouldn’t take long at all.
If you go with the Punisher, you have 4 high slots, but only 3 turret points, so a small energy vampire in that 4th slot is a huge help, especially if you stick with lasers over autocannons. Assuming you can fit it, of course
Yep I’m Marakhan. I thought about making a character on a second account to specialize just in PvP but I’m not sure if I’m willing to pay for a second account, or how long it would take to get decent with a new character.
I’ll focus some more on those skills. I’ve been training the first two recently and will need them even higher to fly with a good Rifter or Punisher loadout.
Thanks for the help!
BTW, who are you in EVE, JC?
You found out last night
Eve University is one of the corps often recommended for newish players, especially those who want to try some PVP
http://www.eve-ivy.com/oog/ivy/index.php?file=about.html
Faction warfare is an option for you as well if you’re still in the NPC corp, though I don’t know how much of it is going on these days. Haven’t tried it myself, being in a frequently 0.0 based corp… a target-rich environment
Wow, Ryan! I didn’t realize you played EVE until this post.
For cheap PvP, I’d go with the Rifter – and check out Wensley’s guide to solo PvP combat in the Rifter.
@baredil – I personally find 0.0 space much safer than lowsec (0.1-0.4) – but it is a very conditional circumstance.
Having started up a pvp alt just FOR pvp, and having started Minmatar, I can tell you flat out, the Rifter is the best frigate class in the game – once you have the skills. T2 guns are nice, but scouts suffice as you go. The big things to train though are things people never think of – shield management for one. That extra bit of shield before it hits armor can save you in so many ways.
Mechanic, Hull Upgrades V, these are bread and butter as are the Electronics and Engineering V skills. Start working into having all your guns skills at 4 and before you know it your about as skilled (game mechanic wise) as you need to be and the rest is on you. The skills listed above are def something to push towards quickly (especially the long drawn out weapons upgrade V and advanced to IV.
I flew the Rifter in PVP all the way up until I hit the Assault Jaguar, and still pop back into it as the cheapest, toughest, meanest PvP frig out there.
Thank goodness the skill que exists
