If someone crashes or logs out and your server has a queue, they should jump to the front of the queue if they try to get back in within 10 minutes. I just waited for almost 2 hours to get into Darkfall, immediately crashed after hitting “Play” (because I forgot to install their C++ redistro, which they forgot to ever tell me to do), and now I get to wait AGAIN. The actual game of Darkfall isn’t as bad as I expected. The effort involved in getting it and getting to play it is in-friggin’-sane on an epic fail scale.
I finally managed to get Darkfall. The grind required to buy the game was more impressive than any purchase-grind in history. But I’m so hardcore that I was finally able to give them my money after nearly two weeks of trying. In 2-3 hours my torrent will be done and I’ll get in there with the heart of a wolf, though I’ll be shorn repeatedly like the sheep I am. Ah, this is almost certainly a bad idea. They invented Browser-Refresh-PvP, so maybe more of their ideas will be awesome.
This month’s Boston Post Mortem has a very special speaker! Jamie Gotch, programmer at 38 Studios and one of the developers of the award-winning iPhone game, Fieldrunners, will be talking about his game. I’ll see if I can roll out with the wife to support the big jerk. This month’s meeting is tomorrow (Tuesday, March 10, 2009) at 7:00PM and will take place at The Skellig in Waltham. More info can be found on the Boston Post Mortem website.
If there’s one thing watching the Watchmen taught me, it’s: “A movie shouldn’t stay true to the book.” Truthfully, I never read it. I’ve always wanted to. Parodies of comic characters in a world where such freelance vigilantes are outlawed. Sounds interesting, like a romping fun, hilarious, dark investigation of the superhero concept. But I found the movie, which allegedly stayed very true to the comics, to be extremely boring.
If there’s one feature I want to see in EVE’s Apocrypha expansion, it’s the ability to change my mouse settings. In what crazy world of fire, ice, and elves does scrolling the mouse wheel backwards zoom toward your avatar? It’s one of the most annoying little things that I’ve always hated about EVE. There are about a zillion options in the game, but none of them let you change any mouse settings. No inversion, no switching zoom with the scroll wheel to perform the same as every other game in the world, nothing. Blergh.
